Tips not to have herniated disc surgery

Lumbar disc herniation, also known as a herniated disc, though food intake has an effect to some extent, is caused in many cases by imbalance of the right and left sides of the body due to wrong postures, weakness of muscles and ligaments, causing back pain, numbness in legs, and sensory abnormalities.

What can be considered as a treatment for relieving disc pain are below.

  • injections, medication, physical therapy, and, in severe cases, surgical methods according to hospital prescriptions
  • herbal remedies including acupuncture
  • ways to stretch and strengthen the muscles involved in pain

The type of treatment to choose will have to be selected in consideration of the level of pain and living conditions of the person. However, among the treatment methods, surgery is the strongest one, and if the pain persists after the operation, it is impossible to return to the state without surgery, so I think it is the last treatment method to consider.

As mentioned earlier, herniated disc is a disease caused by imbalance of the left and right sides of the body due to incorrect postures in daily life, and weakening of muscles and ligaments. Therefore, for prevention or recovery after treatment, changing basic lifestyle habits such as walking, standing, sitting, and lying down,  and correcting postures are required.

In addition, stretching the tight muscles related to disc disease and exercising to strengthen weak muscles are very helpful in prevention, symptom relief, and rehabilitation treatment.

The following are daily postures and habits closely related to herniated disc disease and treatment.

1. WALKING

Walking is a very important and good exercise for preventing, alleviating, and rehabilitating lumbar disc symptoms by forming the muscles of the transverse abdominal, external oblique, and gluteus maximus muscles that increase the stability of the lumbar spine and reduce the burden on the lower back, and hold the shape of the spine.

However, incorrect walking, such as walking with forward head, can cause various physical diseases, including not only herniated and neck discs, but also knee arthritis and pelvic pain.

2. STANDING

When standing, your feet should be in a figure 11 shape and your weight should be balanced on both legs.

Putting more weight on either leg or standing on one leg causes the pelvis to be misaligned and the alignment of the lumbar spine is also not straight.

3. SITTING

When sitting, pull your buttocks back as far as possible and attach it to the chair so that the lumbar spine has a normal curvature. However, there are not many people who sit upright like this, and when working, studying, or watching TV, etc., people usually do not sit right and still, but rather disturb their posture, cross their legs, and so on. As a result, the posture is not straight, the pelvis is deformed and the lumbar spine is distorted. And no matter how well you sit, sitting for a long time is not good for your back health.

If you are forced to sit for long periods of time, take some time to stretch your body, then reposition yourself and sit correctly.

4. LYING on your BACK

The lying position can be considered as the least strain on the lower back. Although it is not applicable to all herniated disc diseases, in a lying position, if you bend and raise your knees, and place your lower back on the floor, it can help relieve disc symptoms as it reduces the pressure on your lower back.

As such, in addition to correcting postures in daily life, you should exercise to relax the bundles of knotted muscles such as quadratus lumborum, psoas major, and erector spinae, which are commonly involved in inducing not only disc pain but back pain in general, and to strengthen weak or imbalanced muscles.

Although pain can be felt in the process of muscle formation through exercise, the fundamental solution for disc prevention, symptom relief, or rehabilitation is steady exercise, so the pain following muscle formation will have to be tolerated.

In summary, the best way to prevent a herniated disc or to treat yourself without surgery when it occurs, in my opinion, is to correct your daily postures and choose appropriate and good exercise that suits you, and practice it regularly and continuously.
